Governor "Kit" Bond- Executive Order June 25, 1976

After Joseph Smith's Death in 1844, the Mormon church splintered into two main groups. A majority of the church's followers travelled with Brigham Young to the Utah territory. Others formed a seperate church under the leadership of Joseph Smith III. Eventually, when the threat of violence had passed, followers of both denominations began returning to Missouri. Boggs' Executive Order 44 remained legal in the state of Missouri until 1976, 138 years after it was issued.

That year, the Governor of Missouri signed an executive order of his own, officially rescinding the "Extermination Order" and apologizing for the wrongs done to the group so many years ago.
